The Sheats Goldstein Residence is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful houses in the world. It is precisely due to its uniqueness and beauty that it never ceases to be used by the greatest fashion photographers, by architecture magazines, and by Hollywood producers. And we, like them, were enchanted by this house.
It is a house where every wish becomes a reality: it boasts an entryway with waterfalls, a swimming pool, a tennis court with a view of Los Angeles, lighting by James Turrell, even a private club, “Club James.” In short, this house has it all.
The Residence was designed by American architect John Lautner, a talented student of Frank Lloyd Wright. It is an outstanding example of organic architecture: mounted upon and built into the hill that surrounds it, this house in Beverly Hills has a view of the city of LA that is both breathtaking and unforgettable. It was built in the ‘60s for the Sheats family, and subsequently acquired in 1972 by James F. “Jimmy” Goldstein, who last month decided to donate the house to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Over the years Goldstein, together with Lautner, had parts of the house redesigned, and has made it super-technological by means of futuristic electronic control systems.
Today the Residence is a true masterpiece, where wood, concrete, and glass join with lighting effects to create sculptural forms in complete harmony with the surrounding environment. And the interior is amazing too: from furnishings to lighting, attention has gone into every detail, so that the design by the acknowledged master Lautner unites aesthetics with function. The luxuriant greenery surrounding the house and the view of Los Angeles form an integral part of the project: here interior and exterior flow into each other thanks to effects created using continuous windows, skylights overhead, and motorized openings. The legendary Jimmy Goldstein has left us his hair collection, a fantastic automatic closet, and also his study, where photos show him with stars of basketball — his great passion — and with celebrities who have visited the house.
More than a mere visit, a trip to the Residence is a true life experience.

Non c’è dubbio: Sheats Goldstein Residence è una delle case più belle al mondo, ed è proprio per la sua unicità e bellezza che viene da sempre contesa dai piu’ grandi fotografi di moda, riviste di architettura e produttori cinematografici Hollywoodiani. E come loro anche noi ne siamo rimaste stregate.
É una casa dove ogni desiderio viene trasformato in realtà: ingresso con cascate d’acqua, piscina, campo da tennis con vista su LA, installazione luminosa di James Turrell e perfino un club privato il “Club James”; insomma non manca proprio nulla.
Progettata dall’architetto statunitense John Lautner, talentuoso allievo di Frank Lloyd Wright, è un grande esempio di architettura organica: incastonata e integrata nella collina che la circonda, a Berverly Hills, ha una vista sulla città di Los Angeles che lascia senza respiro e difficilmente si dimentica. È stata costruita negli anni ‘60 per la famiglia Sheats, e poi acquistata nel 1972 da James Goldstein, che il mese scorso ha deciso di donare la casa al Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Nel corso degli anni Goldstein insieme a Lautner la fece ridisegnare in alcuni particolari, e l’ha resa iper tecnologica con avvenieristici sistemi di controllo elettronico.
Oggi è un vero e proprio capolavoro dove legno, cemento, vetro e giochi di luce creano forme scultoree in totale armonia con l’ambiente che la circonda. E anche gli interni sono stupefacenti: dall’arredamento alle luci, tutto è curata in ogni dettaglio, ed estetica e funzione si uniscono sotto il disegno del maestro Lautner. La natura rigogliosa che circonda la casa e la vista di Los Angeles diventano parte integrante del progetto: interno e esterno si contaminano, con un gioco di vetrate continue, lucernari e aperture motorizzate. Del mitico Jimmy rimane impressa la sua collezione di cappelli, il fantastico guardaroba automatico, e il suo studio, con tutte le foto che lo ritraggono con i giocatori di Basket, sua grande passione, e i personaggi celebri che hanno visitato la casa.
